Volunteer Visit to Scooby

We are just back from volunteering at Scooby in Spain.
Scooby had rescued a lot of nervous galgos from a dog collector in Sevilla. Our task was to put warm coats on all of them. Some of the dogs were so nervous, they could hardly get close. It took 3 hours to put coats on just 8 of the dogs. Once on, the galgos were so grateful and were virtually befriended when they heard soft voices and experienced a gentle touch. We also repaired a broken door and two leaky taps, which saved Scooby a few Euros.
The Scooby shelter's projects for the coming year include: finishing the on-site hospital (the Humane Society International may fund this, an application is pending); building a retirement home for the oldies and terminally ill; repairing the unreliable electricity supply; funding the on-site vet for a year (a young Italian, who is a former student of a vet professor in Madrid, who is also an advocate of the shelter); renovating the wooden dog houses in the shelter; converting some of the wooden dog houses to even more brick built kennels; and building a nursery/puppy room for the street puppies who come in.
With such an unreliable local electricity supply, the water pump for the whole shelter works intermittently and that's on the days the water isn't frozen until mid afternoon. The dodgy electrics also mean that the lighting and appliances can work only sporadically. Plus, the 6 washing machines are always on the go but seem to breakdown fairly frequently.
We don't know how they do it at Scooby, so many miracles and so few staff facing adversity all of the time.
