Greyhound Compassion Support to Spain

In Spain, galgos (Spanish greyhounds) are bred indiscriminately in their tens of thousands in the hope of producing one that will become the national coursing champion.  Until recently, it was an annual tradition for the galgueros (owners/breeders of galgos) to kill their galgos by hanging them in the pine forests at the end of the annual coursing season.  Nowadays, thanks to widespread publicity, the hangings have virtually come to an end.  However, thousands of galgos are forced to live in squalid conditions before they are cast off  to animal shelters or simply abandoned, when they are no longer useful to their owners.

Campaign groups are constantly pressing for improved care of the galgos in the hands of the hunters, as well as urging the Spanish government to ensure animal welfare legislation (Article 337 of the Penal Code) is enforced. Galgos are protected under Article 337 of the Penal Code. This is a federal law and overrules any regional/autonomous laws.

Greyhound Compassion supports the work of Protectora de Animales SCOOBY in Spain.  Scooby is a large animal shelter taking care of the galgos.  Greyhound Compassion provides funding and practical help for the galgos in Scooby's care.
