Greyhounds
Approximately 25,000 greyhounds are registered annually in the greyhound racing industries in Ireland and the UK, the majority are bred in Ireland.  This does not include those puppies who do not make the grade.  The greyhound racing industry and independent rescues are thought to rehome about 8,000 ex-racing greyhounds per annum in the UK.  This leaves many ex-racing greyhounds looking for loving homes every year.

With 6 greyhounds racing at top speed against each other on an oval circuit injuries are a serious problem. The racing industry does not publish injury statistics.  While industry sources will say that more than £250k has been spent on track safety in recent years, it is thought as many as 1,000, otherwise healthy and young, greyhounds are put to sleep annually following injuries sustained in races and trials on British tracks.

Greyhounds make superb family pets.  They are grateful to become your companion and in return are gentle, lazy and affectionate.   Please email us if you can offer a loving home to a rescued greyhound and we can help find the right dog for your family.

Galgos
In Spain tens of thousands of galgos (Spanish greyhounds) are bred indiscriminately in the hope of producing one that will become the national coursing champion.  The owners of the galgos ("galgueros") keep them in poor conditions while they train them to course.  At the end of each annual coursing season in the winter numerous galgos are abandoned because they are of no further use to the galgueros.   The galgueros will breed more dogs for the next coursing season. Spanish rescue societies estimate that 30,000 galgos are killed per annum.

The Scooby shelter in Medina del Campo, Spain, aims to pick up the pieces and rehabilitate and rehome these abandoned and injured galgos.  There are often up to 500 dogs at Scooby needing food, shelter and medical treatment.

Greyhound Compassion contributes funding to small greyhound shelters in the UK and Ireland and to the Scooby shelter.
