Most greyhounds who race in England are bred in Ireland and estimates for this range from 75 – 80%.  Approximately 31,367 greyhounds were bred in Ireland and 4,256 were bred in Britain in 2006.  Yet only 10,101 were registered to race in England in 2006.  Similar figures are also true for previous years.

The regulated greyhound racing industry in England produces a minimum surplus of 13,478 greyhounds per annum and of these a minimum of 4,728 greyhounds is unaccounted for.  A report by the Associate Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare revealed in 2007 that "there are enormous gaps in industry records of numbers of dogs" and  "these figures must therefore be regarded as conjectural and are likely to be a significant underestimation of the true scale of the problem of unwanted dogs being destroyed".

In Spain, tens of thousands galgos (Spanish bred greyhounds) are bred indiscriminately iannually in the hope of producing one that will become the national coursing champion.

Greyhound Compassion supports small greyhound rescue organisations in Ireland, UK and Spain by raising funds for the greyhounds in their care and providing practical help where possible.
